Two bands who largely dispensed with the singer and let the instruments do the talking. Focus came out of Amsterdam with flute, Hammond organ and a guitarist who could riff like a rock band and phrase like a jazz one. Camel came out of Guildford with Andrew Latimer’s singing guitar and a gift for melody that never needed words. Fireworks against warmth. So which titan wins?

The short version

The quick verdict: Focus edge it — the more startling band, with a sound nobody has ever copied and two American gold albums to show for it. But Camel answer with the deeper catalogue and the longer life, and for many listeners theirs is the music that stays. Flash against endurance.

Round 1: Origins and era

Focus took shape in Amsterdam in November 1969, when Thijs van Leer’s trio added guitarist Jan Akkerman. Camel formed in Guildford almost two years later, in October 1971. Both were chasing instrumental music that could hold an audience without a frontman, but Focus got there first and broke internationally first. Edge: Focus.

Round 2: Sound and style

Camel are warm, pastoral and melodic, built around Latimer’s guitar and flute. Focus are something else entirely: Hammond organ and classical flute against Akkerman’s heavy riffing, with van Leer yodelling and whistling over the top, and influences running from Monteverdi to Gregorian chant to jazz. It sounds like a description of a disaster. It is one of the most joyful noises in prog. The edge goes to Focus.

Round 3: The peak albums

Focus answer with Moving Waves, which reached number two in Britain and the top ten in America, and the equally strong Focus 3, both certified gold in the United States. But Camel counter with a run of four: the debut, Mirage, the all-instrumental Snow Goose and Moonmadness, a sustained peak that Focus never quite matched across a whole catalogue. Edge: Camel.

Round 4: Musicianship

Camel were a superb ensemble, and Latimer is revered for tone and phrasing. But the Focus line-up that made Moving Waves was extraordinary: Akkerman moving between blistering rock and delicate lute-like passages, van Leer trained on classical flute, and Pierre van der Linden bringing a jazz drummer’s touch to a rock band. Edge: Focus.

Round 5: Influence and legacy

Focus scored the bigger hit and their music keeps resurfacing, from metal covers of Hocus Pocus to film and advert soundtracks. But Camel built the longer story: fourteen studio albums, a following that spans generations, and a place near the centre of melodic progressive rock, with Latimer leading them still. Edge: Camel.

The verdict: who wins

On the scorecard, Focus take it three rounds to two, and it is close enough that plenty will disagree. At their best they were the more thrilling band, capable of a virtuosity that felt playful rather than pompous, which is rarer in prog than it should be. But Camel win the rounds about staying power, and that matters: theirs is the catalogue you can live inside for years. Focus win on points; Camel win as the band you keep coming back to.

Who is it for

Choose Focus if you want the fireworks — flute, organ, heavy riffs and a sense of humour, played by musicians who could do anything. Choose Camel if you want the warmth — melodic, patient, guitar-led prog that simply wants to move you. Dazzle or comfort; two great instrumental bands from either side of the North Sea.
