Two English bands who understood that space matters as much as notes, and that a guitar can say more by holding back. Pink Floyd turned that patience into some of the biggest albums ever made. Round 1: Origins and era

Pink Floyd formed in London in 1965, at the very birth of British psychedelia, and helped invent progressive rock in the process. Round 2: Sound and style

Both bands trade in patience and atmosphere, and both are led by guitarists who prize tone over speed. But where Pink Floyd build weather systems, vast and slow and often bleak, Camel write tunes. Andrew Latimer’s guitar sings in a way that is almost vocal, and albums like The Snow Goose carry a whole story without a word being sung. For melody alone, the edge goes to Camel.

Round 3: The peak albums

Camel answer with a lovely run: Mirage, the instrumental Snow Goose, and Moonmadness, which many hold to be their finest. Pink Floyd counter with The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall, four albums in six years that between them redefined the form and sold in astronomical numbers. Round 4: Musicianship

Neither band is about technique for its own sake; both are about phrasing, restraint and knowing when not to play. Latimer and David Gilmour are two of the most lyrical guitarists British rock produced, and both bands built superb ensembles around a keyboard player who shaped the whole atmosphere. Honours even. Round 5: Influence and legacy

Camel are deeply loved within prog, and their influence runs quietly through later melodic bands; Steven Wilson is among those who have named them as formative. But Pink Floyd operate on a different scale entirely, with a cultural footprint that reaches far beyond rock music and album sales in the hundreds of millions. Edge: Pink Floyd.

The verdict: who wins

On the scorecard, Pink Floyd take it, and there is no shame in losing to them: this is one of the defining bands of the twentieth century. But Camel are the reason this matchup is worth having. Andrew Latimer has led them from the beginning and leads them still, and across fourteen studio albums he has written melodies as moving as anything in the genre, without ever once shouting for attention.
