Caligula’s Horse — named, with a classical wink, after the horse the Roman emperor Caligula is said to have wanted to make a consul — began in early 2011 in Brisbane as a one-off collaboration between guitarist and composer Sam Vallen and vocalist Jim Grey. The warm response to their debut, “Moments from Ephemeral City”, convinced them to keep going, and after expanding to a full band and signing to the respected InsideOut label, they broke through with their third album, “Bloom” (2015), which reached the Australian top 20.

The players
