The short version

The quick verdict: Area edge it — the more radical, singular and instrumentally dazzling of the two. But Banco hit back with symphonic grandeur and a broader, deeper legacy. This is the avant-garde against the symphonic, and it is gloriously close.

Round 1: Origins and era

Banco formed in Rome in 1969, Area in Milan in 1972, both in the founding years of Rock Progressivo Italiano. Banco arrived a little earlier, but both belong to the same golden generation. We call it a draw.

Round 2: Sound and style

Here Area stake their claim. Theirs is prog like nobody else’s — a fearless fusion of free jazz, Mediterranean and Eastern melody, electronics and political fire, topped by Demetrio Stratos’s astonishing extended-voice techniques. Banco are grand and theatrical, but Area are simply more radical and more singular. The edge goes to Area.

Round 3: The peak albums

Both offer landmark runs. Area give us their incendiary debut, Caution Radiation Area and Crac!; Banco answer with their own debut, the magnificent Darwin! and Io Sono Nato Libero. Both are cornerstones of Italian prog, from opposite ends of the spectrum. Too close to separate — a draw.

Round 4: Musicianship

Here Area edge it. Few bands anywhere played with such fearless virtuosity — jazz-trained brilliance, dizzying odd metres and improvisation, plus Stratos’s voice used as a fifth instrument. Banco are superb and complex too, but Area’s instrumental daring is in a league of its own. Edge: Area.

Round 5: Influence and legacy

Here Banco edge it. As one of the two great pillars of symphonic RPI, beloved and widely known, and carried abroad via ELP’s Manticore label, their reach is broader. Area are revered and hugely influential on experimental music, but their legacy, though profound, is more of a cult. Edge: Banco.

Powered by the surviving brilliance of Patrizio Fariselli, Paolo Tofani and Ares Tavolazzi, and forever defined by Demetrio Stratos, who died in 1979, they made avant-prog like no one before or since. But Banco lose nothing here. Guided by Vittorio Nocenzi and crowned by Francesco Di Giacomo, who died in 2014, they built symphonic prog of grandeur and beauty, and command a broader, deeper legacy.
