The Gentle Giant book I wrote is a full biography of one of the most intricate bands British progressive rock produced. Gentle Giant: The Story of Three Brothers and a Decade is part of my Portraits series, one band to a book.
The band made eleven studio albums, and in August 2026 a remixed reissue of In a Glass House reached number one on the Official Rock & Metal Albums Chart, fifty-three years after the album was made. The book tells the whole story, from the band’s beginnings to that chart return.
What is inside the Gentle Giant book
- The two years on a management company’s label, and what the paperwork shows about who owned what
- Album by album from the debut to Civilian, with the credits as the sleeves print them
- The reissues, the remixes, and a chart record that runs from 2015 to 2026
- Six accounts from inside the band of why it ended, and why they do not agree
Free with the book: a downloadable reference card for the records of the decade, with labels, catalogue numbers, years and lengths on one side, and every British chart entry the reissues have made, each with the name of its chart, on the other.
How the book works
Track listings, durations, credits, labels and catalogue numbers come from the records themselves, not from secondary discographies. A chart position is never printed without the name of the chart it belongs to, which matters here because this band’s chart history is largely a history of specialist charts. Where a fact rests on a single account, the source is named inside the sentence. Where sources disagree, I report the disagreement instead of quietly resolving it. Judgements about how the music sounds are attributed to the critics who made them, and no song lyrics are reproduced.
Where the book fits
It stands on its own and assumes no other reading. If you want the wider picture of the British scene, my Beyond the Thames tells it in full; you can read about it on the Beyond the Thames page. For the other bands I have written about, see the Portraits series.
